Photobucket

Photobucket Dozer is no new face to the scene, in fact Tony van Boxtel has been putting in the graft as a DJ for for over two decades. With the identity of 'DJ Tony' for almost twenty years, he decided upon a change of image and style was required to satisfy his true hunger as an artist. After rebranding himself as 'Dozer', his first new career was launched with such a killer blow the hardstyle dancefloors continue to reverberate to this day! Only a week after the birth of Dozer, the ultimately destructive track 'The Church of the Darkside' was unleashed, a co-production with Michel Pollen of the Donkey Rollers in 2008. Since then, Dozer continues to produce earth-shattering hits such as 'Phantom', 'The Legacy', 'Reverse', 'Relax' and 'Hawk', all released on the Superplastik label. He is also an increasingly big face on the European hardstyle scene, performing at gigs such as Qrime Time, In Qontrol and Nature One.

We catch up with Tony to get to know the Dutch Destroyer aka Dozer that little bit better before he descends on the Mystic Peaks of Kiddstock with his demolishing beats.

Tell us briefly how you got into the music scene..
I started my career in 1990, as a resident dj in a local club. Back in those days I played house and newbeat. Those were really the only styles of dance music then, besides hiphop.

Tell us about your first ever DJ gig..

Haha, it was like my first sexual experience with a woman. So exciting, with the adrenaline rushing through my veins…!!

After 20 years in the scene DJing as DJ Tony, you decided to change your name and signature style, transforming yourself into the hardstyle DJ we know today! What prompted you to make this change?

I decided to change my name, because DJ Tony was also linked to jumpstyle music. I made the decision not to play that style of music anymore, because my heart belongs more to hardstyle. At this moment I’m only playing and producing hardstyle music, sometimes with some early rave hardcore tracks at the end of my set.

PhotobucketWhat music style did you play before this change?
From 2000 till 2007 I played jump and hardstyle and before that period I played from club / groove to hardcore. I was resident so I had to fill the whole evening all by myself in the club.

‘The Church of the Darkside’ is something of a hardstyle anthem – what do you think made it such a massive hit?

Because this is a track with a lot of emotion in it when you listen to it. The track has some dark influences, but is still has a great catchy melody.

What three things could you not live without?
1. Performing as a DJ every weekend. 2. Producing music 3. Having nice dinners (preferably together with a beautiful woman ;-))

Do you see yourself more as a DJ or a producer and why?

I see myself more as a DJ, because this is the way everything started. I was spinning records for years before I made my first track. I do this together with Michel Pollen, who is also the co-producer of Donkey Rollers, The Pitcher and many more. Performing as a dj is something I do alone.

Photobucket If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and what kind of production would you hope to create?
That will be Zany, he is a nice colleague from our label (Fusion / Superplastic) and he is a real good friend of mine for some years now. To be honest, this collaboration is almost a fact, the tracks are almost finished and will be released on Fusion soon. Those tracks are really awesome of course and will surprise you all!

What four people (alive or dead) that have been an inspiration to you would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

If I’m allowed to choose just 4 people, then it will definitely be my parents and two good friends of mine. One of those friends died last year, so I really would like him to join me at my fantasy dinner party. Those four people always supported me with every step I took!!

What has been your most memorable gig to date so far and why?

Well, there were a lot memorable gigs over the past 19 years, which resulted in a lot of highlights so far. To choose one, then I will say my birthday bash we are organising every year. On those nights all my biggest fans, my family, my friends and nicest colleagues are there. The atmosphere is always fantastic! My birthday is every year something special!
